BYD recently released its production and sales report for May 2026. The company sold 383,453 new energy vehicles (NEVs) during the month, maintaining its leading position among Chinese automakers and NEV manufacturers. As of the end of May, BYD's cumulative NEV sales had exceeded 16.5 million units.
Against the backdrop of a challenging domestic market—where passenger vehicle retail sales declined by 20% year-on-year while growing 11.71% month-on-month—BYD achieved a year-on-year sales increase of 0.26% and a month-on-month growth of 19%, demonstrating strong resilience.
More importantly, BYD's overseas performance continued to accelerate. In May, the company exported 160,100 NEVs, up 80.4% year-on-year and accounting for approximately 42% of its total monthly sales, setting a new record for overseas deliveries.
The rapid expansion of exports has become a key driver of BYD's competitiveness. As overseas demand grows, the company is increasingly able to offset fluctuations in the domestic market, further highlighting the advantages of its global strategy.
Several models delivered strong performances in overseas markets. The Seagull sold 30,019 units in May, while the Song PLUS reached 27,755 units. Combined sales of the Yuan UP EV and PHEV totaled 25,814 units. Other popular models—including the Yuan PLUS, Song Pro DM-i, Dolphin and Sea Lion 07 EV—also exceeded 10,000 units in monthly sales. Meanwhile, BYD's SHARK pickup recorded sales of more than 4,000 units for the second consecutive month, further enriching the brand's overseas product portfolio.
Industry observers believe BYD's success overseas is closely tied to its evolving globalization strategy. The company has moved beyond simple vehicle exports and is increasingly investing in localized manufacturing, sales and service networks. As overseas production capacity and dealer channels continue to expand, BYD is transitioning from 'exporting products' to 'building long-term brand presence' in global markets.
Beyond sales growth, BYD's brand influence is also gaining recognition internationally. On May 15, 2026, BYD won the 'Manufacturer of the Year' award at the UK AM Awards, becoming the first Chinese automotive brand to receive the honor. From being shortlisted in 2025 to winning the top award in 2026, BYD has rapidly evolved from a newcomer to a mainstream player in the highly competitive British market, reflecting the growing acceptance of Chinese NEV brands in mature automotive markets.
In the premium segment, BYD's DENZA brand has officially entered Europe. On April 8, 2026, the DENZA Z9GT made its debut at the Paris Opera House in France, marking the initial formation of BYD's dual-brand strategy in Europe, spanning both mass-market and premium segments. Meanwhile, as of April 2026, BYD had established sales and after-sales service networks across major European markets, further strengthening its global operational capabilities.
As the global new energy vehicle industry continues to evolve, Chinese automakers are becoming increasingly competitive on the world stage. BYD's rapid overseas expansion not only demonstrates the success of its globalization strategy, but also reflects a broader transformation within China's automotive industry—from exporting products and expanding scale to building global brands and establishing long-term market presence.
